Two Engines And No Chance: The Indy 500s Most Incredible Home Built Entry
Просмотров 150 тыс.Месяц назад
The Indy 500 has long been recognized as one of the most amazing hot beds of racing innovation in history. The 1966 race saw a car that may well stand as one of the most unique, inventive, and downright odd of the era. The Stein-Valvoline Special was a twin Porsche engined, four wheel drive, California garage built machine from the mind of a former midget racing champion and his friends. The st...

Battling Beast Of Burden: Why The M26 Dragon Wagon Was The Greatest Heavy Duty Truck Of WWII
Просмотров 432 тыс.2 месяца назад
This is the in-depth history of what I believe to be the greatest heavy duty truck of the second world war. The M26 tank retriever was a machine designed with armor, with an engine of 1,090ci, with brute strength, and above all, with loads of practical engineering built in. The truck out-performed every other rig in this role worldwide and was just beyond cool. With nearly 1,400 produced betwee...

This is totally awesome, totally wild, and barely s...

That’s just a bad idea!! It has four cv shafts and they were made for a pile of crap stock tornado !! It’s just a bad plan !!! It broke a driveshaft !! Probably up front !!! !!!! Today we have cv shaft that will handle a thousand hp back then it was probably home made cv shaft made it so dangerous!!!!!
I don't see the Euro styling. The Tornado is all American to me.
Well if it was responsible. Well then it saved a lot of lives then.
Sounds like a true car guy. Run it until it bankrupts you, keep rebuilding it. And never address the bizarre front and rear wheel speed problem, lol.
WHERE'S THE VIDEO?????
>You could get a huge warplane v12 engine from a junkyard in the 1960s for... one hundred dollars Fighting back tears of rage as a 2003 Ranger with a straight-four goes for fifteen thousand.. This country went from the land of opportunity to a straight-up sheep-shearing operation
I remember when Mississippi Power and Light (now a part of Entergy) used those trucks to haul massive transformers around. My best friend's dad worked for MP&L as a pilot and he was a curious man. So he asked about the gas milage those trucks got and it was on mile per gallon, just as you mention. And back then most of the highways were two lanes and you could get stuck behind those big trucks doing 25MPH for a long time, especially on Highway 51, the main highway between New Orleans and Chicago. We would take the 100 mile trip to see my dad's parents at least twice a month which took, from Jackson to Duckhill, about two and a half hours through rolling prairie (covered with trees and pastures). There was only one long, straight section, on the entire drive. So getting stuck behind one was rare in that area but we often got stuck behind a big truck or one of these and drive miles behind it before finding a safe place to pass.
Scammell of the UK had also been using chain driven walking beam suspension for years before.
Laying the transcontinental cables alone made it one of the most importrant ships in history.
That was when going to Harvard meant something.
Cartoon character’s came to mind
Thanks, this is 1 of my interests but so far the only books I have art Repairing the Panzers 1&2. Can you suggest any good books about the American vehicles that are more than just photos please? And Bob's your uncle back at you!
They had one of those in Parris Island MCRD back in 72 when I was there it was used to go out and retrieve the bodies of the recruites who tried to go UA and get stuck in the muck and they would drown when the tide came in and drowned them nobody ever made it across the swamp There is only 3 ways to get off Parris Island MCRD and that's Dead Discharged Graduated
Love the speedo on those old tornados...
Ford was on the right side of every issue of the 1920's turns out. Bankers would disagree though...
Anyone remember propane X it was a tornado too
That hand formed body is a masterpiece- wow - amazing work
Used to live down the street from Fred Goeske. Great guy...funny. I remember he would occasionally, start up his funny car, and actually Drive It to the market, that was about 5 blocks away. Then he would crawl out of it, and walk in to buy a 6 pack. Then his wife would show up, with thier ramp truck. Load it up, and go home. Local PD didn't care, and looked the other way, so to speak. He wasn't bothering anyone, and the whole neighborhood would come outside to cheer him on. He kept it at the speed limit, and waited for the traffic lights to change....while shooting flames out of his headers. I'll never forget it! Everyone loved it...even the cops thought it was cool. Would never happen today!! Someone would complain about it.
It took a video on a Tow Truck to see the best unseen before Combat Photography...mmm mmm mmm.
Grandfather of the Coyote.
Speaking of the Archimedean screw and its working to move fluid. Picture an Archimedean screw the size of a large ballpoint pen. At each end rubies act as bearings and have a estimated life of 1200 years. Now imagine this PUMP inserted in your CHEST after your damaged/diseased heart has been removed. Your blood pressure is just one number because there is no "heartbeat" which of course gives you two numbers a systolic and diastolic number. The biggest drawback seemingly is the fact that you have to wear a battery in a backpack at all times. It is my understanding that it may be installed as a backup to your existing heart if you are having problems with your natural heart. It is also my understanding that Dick Cheney has one. Just thought I would throw in my two cents worth awesome video seems like it would make a wonderful toy for folks who live in a snowy climate. Okay that's all I got peace.
Yes
Cool and interesting, engaging. Thanks. Subscribed and I'll be watching more.
awsum as always!
Nice work Brian, that was one of the coolest hot rod stories ever.
i think we would have got the point without having to watch a horse be abused. just sayin
I remember back in the day… watching a video demonstration on TV news. Have been wondering if Ukraine could use some, but you've shown me it's limit.

all freemasons, satanic muppets
I'm a life long Oldsmobile aficionado, with among others, a 1966 Starfire with an over bored 455 in it. Fun times were had in that car! What an amazing story about the Terrifying Tornado, why would it be so wildly mangled over the years? I'm so glad to have watched your whole series about the car and I'm impressed with John Smyser's sheer stubbornness to stick with such a radical and temperamental setup! Great work and I'm subbed to see more of it! Here's to historical accuracy!
Fascinating
Oliver Wendell Douglas shoulda been driving one of these in Green Acres!
He did a great job of putting this together even with the obvious engineering problems 🙂
Best account of this Engine Yet !!!
neat stuff! love learning about things i'd kind of known of but in greater detail
Toronado for sale, low miles, only driven weekends..
brits always over engineer ref lucas engineering wiring schematics
People really don't know or understand how good a pilot Jimmy Doolittle was. It's funny, people continually claim that the British and Eric Brown had to test U.S. aircraft for Doolittle and explain to him how they performed. The premise is utterly absurd, and extremely disrespectful toward Doolittle. He was quite literally one of the very best pilots of those two decades. And an expert on aircraft performance and design. It's both ludicrous and hilarious for Eric Brown to presume that he was in any position to lecture Doolittle about aircraft.
Thanks, I never knew the whole story.
at 12:02, you mention Geoffrey Pike, and this wasn't his only wild idea: He also figured out a process of freezing sawdust and water into material called Pykrete, and pitched an idea of building an aircraft carrier out of it. The project went underway, as far as making a model in Canada, which actually survived a couple of winters, but it never went beyond that.
I'm from the off-road world where gearing is everything. Well not everything but day one, class one type of a deal. Different methods of power delivery to different tires sounds like an exercise in sending the old ticker into dangerous territory on the dragstrip. Pucker up your behind and pray for the seat covers..
US army: We need a screw propelled machine for crossing marshes and bogs Screw propelled machine: Exceeds at crossing marshes and bogs US army: Sick? Now how does it do around Daytona? Seriously what is with the US Army post WW2? Between this thing and the FAL its like they just have no idea what they're asking for when they want equipment
why didnt they just run the car on methanol, its alot more stable than nitro, ya it would have been making less power but it would be alot more reliable and consistent.
Be the reason something is illegal.
Great story Brian. The wiki page for the napier-deltic engine is well worth the look. It's animated !
That thing is great! Thank You for showing this.
100 years have passed, but the same lies remain. Although the truth has long since come to light
Milkweed
I knew of these, read a book with a chapter on the earlier ones. There is also a story on again the earlier ones on You Tube somewhere. This is the best story on these things. Personally the smaller one with the slopey would be the most suitable. Exhaust could be overcome,,, move it out the back. Use would be limited BUT in Vietnam and similar places it would have a place. The big one is simply too big. Possibly fun,, just needs nitro and zoomies! As for off topic from Brian,, he does own and old 8N Ford Tractor!!
Showing one of the best parts of ubiquitous automobiles...at least when they get stuck in the snow, you're only hitting a bunch of metal. That poor horse!
